The Department of Electrical Engineering was founded in 1968. The organization and the name had been changed for many times. The Institute of Electronic Engineering was established in 1991, and the name of the department was formally changed to the Department and Institute of Electrical Engineering since March, 1992. In 1999, the Ph.D. program was approved and started to enroll students. It thus became a complete department with BS study, MS study, and Ph.D. study, which can provide students consistent development of learning and research.


As industries develop in Taiwan, and the technological era evolves, the need for electrical and electronic talents as well as relevant technological research increases day after day. Accordingly, the Department of Electrical Engineering develops to foster professionals for general electrical engineering. The undergraduate teaching emphasizes theories, technologies, and practical experience. The curriculum planning aims to educate generalists in electrical engineering in hopes of successfully developing toward six electrical fields, respectively communications and signal processing, control engineering, electrical and electronic circuits, solid-state electronics, and electric waves and information technology. Meanwhile, the electrical fields of other departments/institutes are integrated. Undergraduate students have to earn at least 138 credits in order to graduate. Those credits include 28 credits for common education courses, 68 credits for department-stipulated compulsory courses, 12 credits for department-stipulated compulsorily elective courses and at least 30 credits for elective courses. In addition to compulsory courses, such as Seminar and Master’s Thesis, Master students should at least earn 24 credits, including 9 credits from the courses belonging to their own groups as well as 3 credits from the courses belonging to other groups. The maximum credits from taking relevant courses in other departments/institutes are 9 credits. Except compulsory courses, such as Seminar and Master’s Thesis, Ph.D. students should at least take 6 professional courses, totally 18 credits, which include 9 credits from the courses belonging to their own groups and 6 credits from the courses belonging to other groups.
